Second-Generation Jeweler

Raised in the
Diamond District

Most people discover a career. Johnny Kalo was born into one. Growing up in the Los Angeles Jewelry District, he spent his childhood watching his father Edmund — founder of Gold Empire Jewelry — work alongside master jewelers, studying stones, and learning a trade that most people only see through a glass counter.

What began as a boy sitting at his father's bench became a lifelong calling. Mentored by Edmund for more than two decades, Johnny absorbed the technical precision, the eye for quality, and — perhaps most importantly — the way his father treated every person who walked through the door.

"My father taught me that a jeweler's reputation isn't built on what he sells. It's built on how he makes people feel."

The Path

Why Jewelry.
Why It Matters.

After earning his diamond grading education from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Johnny didn't just learn how to evaluate a stone — he learned how to see what most jewelers miss. The subtle play of light through a well-cut pavilion. The difference between a technically graded diamond and one that genuinely performs on a finger.

But the GIA credential was only part of the foundation. Years of building direct relationships with diamond suppliers and designers around the world gave Johnny something no certification alone can provide: access, intuition, and the ability to source stones that most retailers never see.

"I didn't choose this career because I love jewelry. I chose it because I love the moments jewelry creates — the proposal, the anniversary, the heirloom passed to a daughter. That's what I'm really making."

Philosophy

How Johnny Works

"When someone asks me what I'm best at, I don't say diamonds. I say earning trust. Everything else follows from that."

Listen First

Before showing a single stone, Johnny sits down and listens — to your story, your vision, your budget, your concerns. The right piece starts with understanding, not inventory.

Educate, Don't Sell

Johnny walks you through cut quality, stone origins, metal alloys, and pricing — so you understand exactly what you're buying and why. An informed client makes a confident decision.

Price With Integrity

Direct relationships with global suppliers and LA craftsmen mean no inflated middleman markups. Johnny's pricing reflects the actual value of materials and craftsmanship — nothing more.

Stay Connected

Prompt responses, progress updates throughout your project, and a genuine relationship that extends long after the purchase. Most clients return — and send their family.

The Experience

Working With Johnny

There's no display counter between you and Johnny. No rotating sales staff. No pressure to decide today. You sit down together, and he listens — to what you're celebrating, what you're imagining, and what matters to you.

He'll show you inspiration from similar projects he's completed. He'll walk you through diamond options side by side, explaining why one stone outperforms another at the same carat weight. He'll give you his honest opinion on where to invest and where to save.

And if you're not ready? That's perfectly fine. Johnny's clients come back because of how they were treated — not because they were pushed.

"Most of my engagement ring clients don't find me through ads. They come because someone they trust told them, 'Go see Johnny.' That referral is the highest compliment I can receive."
