How to Buy a Diamond

The 4Cs — Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat. Mastery means understanding the science and exploiting pricing thresholds.

The Most Important C

Cut Quality

Cut refers to proportions, symmetry, and polish — not shape. A GIA "Excellent" means crown (34–35°), pavilion (40.6–41.0°), depth (59–62.6%), and table (54–57%) harmonize for maximum light return.

Johnny's rule: Never compromise on cut — a well-cut 0.90ct outshines a poorly-cut 1.00ct.

The Sweet Spot

Color Grade

GIA grades D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). D–F command premiums, but G–J appear identical face-up. Fluorescence in I–J can counteract yellowing.

Insider tip: Strong fluorescence hurts D–F stones but can help I–J stones appear whiter.

Clarity

Clarity grades inclusions, FL to I3. VS2 and SI1 offer the best value — invisible to the naked eye.

Exception: Step cuts (emerald, Asscher) have open tables — VS1+ is mandatory.

Weight vs. Visual Size

Carat Weight

1 carat = 0.20g, but your eye reads millimeters, not weight. A 0.94ct measures ~6.30mm — nearly identical to 1.00ct at 6.32mm.

Why it matters: Cutters sacrifice proportions for milestones — a 1.00ct can look darker than a 0.94ct.

The "Magic Size" Strategy

Pricing jumps at milestone weights. Buy just below and reallocate savings into a superior cut.
